Bali Day 4 – Kuta


Today we came to Kuta- a beachside town in Bali. Not as secluded as Nusa Dua which has high end luxury resorts with their private beaches Kuta is a beach town with a lively night life and has hotels and accommodations of all shapes and sizes to cater to the myriad tourists from all over the world. The car ride from Ubud to Kuta was pleasant and uneventful. Our hotel is called Amnaya Resort, located at the centre of town. Pretty good location, nice room, with large restaurant, swimming pool etc. I missed Purana Resort, the cute little boutique hotel that we stayed in Ubud for the last three days. Boutique hotels give you a very personalised attention and you make friends with the front desk staff and get to know them a bit. in a day or two one starts feeling like home in such places. Goa Gajah meaning “The Elephant Cave”, is located on the island of Bali near Ubud. Although the exact origins of the cave are uncertain, it is believed to have been built as a place for spiritual meditation. One folklore relates that it was created by the fingernail of the legendary giant Kebo Iwa. However, examining its style, the sanctuary was probably dated from the 11th century Bali Kingdom.  The complex contains both Hindu and Buddhist imagery, as the cave contains lingam and yoni, symbols of Shiva and the image of Ganesha, , while by the river there are carved images of stupas and chattra, imagery of Buddhism.  The cave was rediscovered by Dutch archaeologists in 1923, but the fountains and bathing pool were not discovered until 1954. it’s a beautiful serene place.
